“The friend is here,” Zeke said, glancing at his computer, where the security footage was displayed.

I followed his gaze and watched the two women embrace. Willow was slim and ethereal, while Sage was shorter, curvier, and brunette.

“Let’s run them through the plan,” I said.

Zeke and I had already decided we’d be putting a protective team on Willow. Even if she hadn’t asked for it, we took care of our own, and whether she liked it or not, she was one of us now. Personally, I didn’t think watching over her was enough. Anytime she was out of sight, my nerves went crazy.

As we approached my office, the women and Kade came into view in the corridor just outside. I immediately noticed that Kade had an unusual expression. Something was off with him, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.

Willow was speaking rapidly to Sage. Updating her on the situation, I supposed. She looked up, and her lips curved as she saw us coming. That slight change felt like a punch to my gut. It left me winded and confused, but strangely, I liked it. Her happiness, however minor or fleeting, lit me up.

“Sage.” Willow spoke louder, presumably for our benefit. “This is Ronan, and his other business partner, Zeke.”

The brunette turned, and without warning, launched herself at us, her arms open wide. She wrestled both Zeke and me into an embrace, then broke away. “Thank you for saving my Willow. I don’t know what I’d have done if you hadn’t been there.” Her lower lip wobbled, and I worried she’d break down in tears, but she took a deep breath and stilled the tremble. “I told her we should go to the police, but she was worried about Tom.”

“You’re welcome,” I said. “I’m sure she mentioned it already, but we’ve spoken to the police now.”

“Good.” Sage’s eyes narrowed, and the directness of her gaze caught me by surprise. Apparently, the yogi had a hidden layer of steel. “I hope they catch those men and make them rethink their major life choices.”

Before she could say anything more, my phone rang. I extracted it from my pocket. “King.”

“Ronan, this is Detective Lee. The crime scene techs have finished at Ms. Lennox’s apartment. They said the door will need to be replaced. It splintered when the offender kicked it down and the damage is irreparable.”

“Damn.” I was definitely not okay with sending Willow and Sage back to a place where they’d be sitting ducks if anyone came looking for them. “Anything else worth noting?”

“There’s blood on the floor that corroborates Willow’s story. Nothing major. Just what could be expected from a shallow head wound.”

My gut churned. I hated the idea of Willow bleeding. “Thanks for the update. I’ll let you know if we find anything. If you need to speak to the roommate, she’s here with us.”

“We’ll have to get her version of events,” Joanna said, as I’d expected.

“Of course. I’ll pass her contact details along.”

We ended the call. The group around me had fallen silent, no doubt waiting to hear the latest.
